Introduction to Joshua the pre-med student

Hey everyone, it is Joshua! As you can tell from the title I am a pre-med student (and hopefully it does not stay that way) here at the University of Oklahoma. I am majoring in Biochemistry, yes I know it may not be every ones cup of tea but I find it very fascinating.

I was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico but after a couple of years moved to Washington and since then my family and I have moved every three years. The reason being my dad is in the military. Through this experience I have had many opportunities to travel all around the world which has been amazing. However, with that I must also restart my life in a sense every three years. This means new location, new house, new school, new friends, etc. It also means saying goodbye to all the old friends and being away from extended family which is tough.

But back to my life as a student. I am finally a senior and this is my last semester here at OU. I have taken all the prerequisite classes and taken the MCAT as well. With interviews coming up and acceptance/rejection letters coming out soon, this is a very stressful and nerve-racking time. On top of all this, I am a president of an honor society here at OU. It is in the works of being rebuilt as most of the leadership left last spring including the advisor. But it is a process. I am confident with the new leadership and our new advisor that this honor society will be restored to its original glory.

As said earlier, this is my last semester. It is sad to think that my last OU football game as a student is gone, my last homecoming, my last Big Event, my last set of classes as an undergraduate, etc. My time here has come and gone. It still feels as if I just started. Although, this chapter in my life is coming to an end, I will never forget the memories I have had here and will forever be a Sooner.

Boomer Sooner!

Update: Joshua the Medical Student. I found out that I was accepted to medical school at the University of Incarnate Word!

  1. I should find some way to create a kind of "pre-med" cluster for these classes, Joshua. There are always students looking at health careers in these classes, but somehow this semester it seems like an even bigger presence than usual. That always makes me glad, because storytelling is actually a part of what health communication is about; being able to use stories to get messages across to your patients can be a really powerful skill, so I hope this class can help you think about just what it means to tell a story in your own way for your own purposes and message.
And my family moved around all the time when I was little; it was hard, but it is a big part of who I am today and how I look at the world, and I think it's a strength. I'm guessing it's part of why I am so endlessly curious about other places in the world, even if now I am mostly visiting them on the magic carpet of the Internet instead of having to pack up and move, ha ha. I hope you will enjoy the virtual visit to India (past and present) that this class can provide!

    1. I have noticed that there are a lot of "pre-med" students in this class as well! That is so true, I had never thought about it like that.

I would agree, it is definitely a strength, especially when coming to college it made it really easy to "start over". I am really enjoying this class and my visit to India!

  2. Hello Joshua,
It is nice to meet you. My family likes to travel a lot so I have been to New Mexico. My mom says she wants to move there after me and my siblings graduate. I have lived in Oklahoma all my life and I am a shy person. I feel like moving around a lot would have been tough. Well, I hope you get into the medical school you desire!
    Your classmate,
    Joanna Yoon

  3. Hey there, Joshua! It's cool that you're pre-med; I'm sure that it's very interesting and challenging. My dad is actually a doctor and specializes in internal medicine. Being a senior seems stressful when you have aspirations for grad-school, but I'm sure, with your leadership positions, you'll make it into a great program! It's cool that you've traveled a lot... that's something I have recently made an increasing effort to do. I've never been to Washington, but one of my friends moved there a few years ago and sends me beautiful pictures of the landscape!

  4. Hi Joshua,
I think it's awesome that you're premed. I'm sure it's a really difficult but rewarding major. I can totally relate to you on graduating soon. This is my last semester at OU and I'm starting to get really sad about having to leave soon. I feel like all these years I've been saying I can't wait to be done with school but now that it's almost over I wish it could slow down. I actually lived in Washington for a little while and I loved it. It's a really beautiful place to live and I loved the nature.

  5. Hey Joshua! I have a good friend who just got accepted to OU's medical school last semester, you'll do great I am sure! My friend told me about the process and it does not sound fun! Also Albuquerque is a beautiful place! I haven't spent much time there but I went to the top of Sandia Peak once and it was an incredible view.

  6. Hey Joshua, moving around so much must have been a challenging experience, but I am glad you derived some positives from it. I think you hit the nail right on the head about how quickly college ends. Although you've seen your last football game as a student, I hope you get the chance to come back and watch one as an alum. Also, good luck on your medical school. interviews.

  7. Hey Joshua!
I was also a premed major! I switched over to law, but I have always found the medical field extremely interesting. Biochemistry sounds challenging, but is also probably very rewarding. It’s definitely not for everyone, and it’s neat that you’re doing it. New Mexico seems like such an enjoyable place to live, I love getting to visit Santa Fe over the summer. Your picture of the landscape is absolutely breathtaking!

  8. Hi Joshua,
First off, congratulations on your senior year as a Pre-med student! That deserves an award in itself because I know how exhausting it can be. I used to be a Pre-med student, but between work, the military, and school, it became too much! Graduating is definitely a bitter sweet moment. Knowing that next time you go to a game, you'll be an alumni is so awesome, but sad because it'll be a completely different experience.

  9. Hi Joshua,
First off, I respect you a ton for everything you have on your plate from your major to rebuilding a club. Where all have you lived besides New Mexico and Washington with your dad's job and why did you pick OU? Have you enjoyed being able to be in a town for longer than 3 years? I have never been to Albuquerque or Washington but have heard they are beautiful and so I would love to visit!

  10. Hi Joshua! So nice to meet you! It's so cool that you're a pre-med student and majoring in Biochemistry! I'm sure you're really dedicated, because it must be stressful having to balance all of your classes. Where do you plan on going to medical school? Have you thought about what you wanted to do in the medical field after school?

  12. Hey Joshua!

Congrats on being almost finished with school! I know it can be pretty bitter sweet, as now you have to move on from what you were used to, but that also means that you made it (especially since you hold a leadership position and are in a pretty tough major for most people!) I noticed that you said that you have moved around quite a bit, where was your favorite place you've lived and why did you choose OU for college? Finger crossed on your acceptance letter!

  13. Hey Joshua!
My dad was in the Navy, so I have had a very similar story. I also moved every three years, so I understand your struggles. It was hard, but I'm thankful of everywhere I have been able to live. My favorite was Washington State. We moved there multiple times, so that is probably why. Good luck on all getting accepted to all of your top schools! I wish you the best luck!

  14. Hi Joshua I enjoyed reading your introduction post! You sound like a smart young man with a bright future! Sounds like a stressful time for you with acceptance letters and all. This whole adulting thing in general is pretty stressful. Trying to carve your own life and career out all by yourself is pretty daunting. At least thats what it feels like for me. I hope everything works out the way you want it to!

  15. Hi Joshua!

I am a pre-dental student and I hope it doesn't stay that way too. I love the bit of humor you added at the beginning of your intro. I wish you the best of luck. I know how stressful it can be. It's awesome the way your dad is serving our country. My dad was actually in the Air Force for 8 years. This was before I was born though. I am only a junior but you are right, time is flying by. Like you, when it's all said and done, I will always be a proud Sooner.

  16. I’m also a senior and I too feel sad that all that has made up my last few years is gonna be gone. Pre med Biochem is must have been one of the hardest degrees to be honest, I was Bio pre-vet for a while, and while I lasted two years, I couldn’t handle the stress so I decided to switch. The switch was the best decision of my life though, I’m in such a happier place. You seems super motivated so it makes me feel like it was a breeze for you, with all your med-school things almost done as well!

  17. Hi Joshua! Chemistry overall is one of my favorite subjects, so I made it my minor! However, I am avoiding P-Chem like the plague... Anyways, how is your last semester going? I am a senior also, but I'm taking an extra year so I'll be a super-senior! My dad was also in the military so we've lived in Germany, Maryland, and Oklahoma!

  18. Hi Joshua!
It's nice to meet you, at least online. I'm a senior as well! However I am staying a fifth year in order to finish out my dual majors and possibly a minor. I enjoyed chemistry in high school, but I didn't see myself successfully completing it in college. I think it's awesome that you have been able to travel a bunch and I envy you for it. Congrats on getting into med school!

  19. Hey Joshua!
It's really cool to read about your story. I was once a biochem major, and as you said, it just wasn't my cup of tea. I'm still pre-med and took the MCAT last Friday (this month of limbo before scores may kill me). However, the update for Joshua, the Medical Student, is very encouraging, so hopefully I can join you next year with: Jack, the Medical Student!

  20. Hey Joshua! Congratulations on getting into medical school! Moving around is definitely a dual-edged sword. I imagine you have seen many amazing places though! What has been your favorite place that you've lived? I would agree that time here at OU goes by incredibly quickly - I will be a senior next year, and it feels like I just got here! The amazing memories are very real though, and holding on to those can help a person through any transitional phase. Best of luck on the journey ahead.

  21. Hi Joshua! I'm a senior as well, though not a pre-med - I'm a math major. Still, congratulations on getting admitted to medical school! Waiting to hear back from graduate schools really is super duper stressful, so I am glad you got an answer, and that it was positive no less! I wish you great luck in the future, from one graduating student to another!

  22. Hey Joshua,
It was nice getting to know you through your introduction. I am a microbiology major so I had to take the biochem lecture and know I am in the biochemical methods lab. It is difficult but I will agree with you that is it fascinating. I am sure moving around so often wasn’t easy as a kid but im sure seeing new places and traveling was a silver lining. I wish you the best of luck in Med school and the last 3 weeks.
